Rwanda fenugreek (Trigonella foenum-graecum) is one of the most popular spices whose leaves and seeds flavor soups and salads.  A staple in India, Yemen, North African countries and southern Europe, fenugreek has found widespread cultivation in Eastern Africa. It thrives under harsh weather conditions including extreme heat. It comes with bushy leaves that attain a blue-green color. The main extract from the leaves is Soloton, which is a compound with the same aromatic composition as capsaicin in pepper. It also comes from the seeds.

The origin of fenugreek may have been modern-day Syria or Turkey during the ancient times. The first recorded growth of the plant was in Iraq around 4000 B.C. It would later come to spread to North Africa, the Mediterranean and West Asia.

The nutritional makeup of fenugreek includes iron at 186 percent of the daily value. This makes the spice good against anemia. The intake of the leaves also improves digestion as they come with 100 percent of the daily needs of dietary fiber. There is also vitamin C content of 5 percent of the daily value. Vitamin B-6 which enables cell metabolism is present at 30 percent in each serving. The unsaturated fat margin is 6 grams for every 100 grams which makes it a healthy choice for the heart.

We source Rwanda fenugreek from various parts of the country. Our family sources own no more than 2 acres of land which they maintain with organic manure rather than commercial fertilizers. They also keep away from chemical sprays to bring down the chemical residual buildup in the produce.

We harvest Rwanda fenugreek through a phytosanitary process. Our workers who wear full PPE start by snapping the mature pods from the plant by hand. They use snippers and scissors to slash the stalks a few centimeters from the base of the pod. They also cut gently to keep the feathery pods from spilling the seeds.

We thresh Rwanda fenugreek pods using hand methods. Our team rubs them between their sanitized gloves covering their hands and fingers. The seeds spill into a waiting basket. We then transfer them to gunny sacks or bags with polyethylene linings.  The temporary storage of the produce comes immediately after the hulling is done to keep the leaves fresh (if they are not dried).

We pack Rwanda fenugreek in PET tins, jute bags with foil linings and glass jars. We use brown-tinted jars that reduce the entry of light to prolong the color, aroma and freshness of the by-product. We have standard packing of the leaves and seeds of 50 KGs net. We also provide flexible weight measures that can either go up or below that level. Our poly bags, additionally, provide climatic travel conditions especially during the summer order season.

We store Rwanda fenugreek at the maximum temperature of 5 degrees Celsius. We prolong the freshness of the leaves by storing them in airtight containers during the temporary duration of post-harvest handling.

We transport the cargo to the airport in Kigali on the same day of packing. We use special trucks that come fitted with refrigeration equipment. The cargo will usually reach you in the space of a day or two after dispatch.
