Ethiopia frankincense is one of the more tropical versions of the Boswellia olibanum tree extracts that are aromatic in nature. It commonly serves as a major incense next to myrrh. However, its aroma is not the only quality behind it for it has served for centuries as a potion for promoting joint health. It also has anticancer properties due to its cell growth promotion. The oil commonly serves as a mood enhancer as it reduces anxiety. Ethiopia and Somalia still remain the biggest African producers and two of the top frankincense exporters in the world.

Frankincense has been available for 4000 years and used to be a major traded product in ancient Abyssinia in ancient times. Its name is derived from the French terms, ‘free lighting’ or ‘pure incense,’ phrases that describe its use in religious ceremonies and in other aromatic occasions. Ethiopia and Somalia still rank as the main sources of the oil that the Roman Catholic church buys each year.

We source frankincense as a raw material from farming belts that have Good Agricultural Practices (GAP) certifications. We source it from the Tigray region of northern Ethiopia which produces the olibanum type which is the most exported of all varieties across the globe. We also obtain some of the gum resin of the Boswellia papyrifera variety from the Eritrea border. All our farmers are small scale and have ten trees per 1 to 1.5 hectares.

We sort and grade Boswellia fruits as soon as they have turned a perfect color. We usually go for the Silver type or Hijari, which describes a clear color, pure content, maturity and well shaped fruits. These high grades are what most our customers go for. We also source the frankincense from neighboring Sudan (Sudanese frankincense) and the world’s most famous Somalia (Boswellia olibanuam) variety.

We extract Ethiopia frankincense oil by first separating the resin part from the boswellic acid/essential oil part. Steam distillation is one of the most important ways of extracting the essential healing oils of frankincense but it is not enough for separating the essential oils from the therapeutic resin part. For this reason, we use solvents that are edible including vegetable and animal oils to remove the oleoresins of the leaves. They are 100 percent natural and therefore are quite safe to use for any kind of processing.

We commonly use olive oil as the extracting medium for Ethiopia frankincense oil. We first of all boil the solution. For every part of resin that is ground into small particles, we use two to three parts of the extracting solvent of olive oil. When the solution reaches boiling point, it begins to dissolve into the oil. We then turn the heating apparatus off. The next step involves filtering the oil part using a special sieve or sterilized cloth that sieves the main part of the oil from that of the resin. After cooling we pack it in 250 milliliters packets.

We provide diverse packaging of Ethiopia frankincense oil that is 100 percent unadulterated. We provide potions from as little as 10ml to the average 250ml and 1 liter. We pack in aromatherapy grade glass, plastic or tin bottles. The next process involves packing the content into special cartons that are actually bags-in-cartons. They keep the therapeutic product in the same way medicine undergoes storage.

We store our frankincense oil from Ethiopia in cold storage of around 5° Celsius and below. The transportation of the content is usually in refrigerated vehicles that keep it in the same condition as its grading.
