Ethiopia chilled goat meat is widely consumed locally and internationally. The meat is sourced from small scale herders and pastoralists.

Capra aegagrus hircus are the oldest domesticated species of animals. The origin of the goat is traced in almost 9000 years ago. Goats were first domesticated in the western Asia hills and Eastern Europe, where headers kept wild goats. There are over 299 distinct breeds of goats. However, the first breeds in Ethiopia were traced back in the years between 4000-5000 years ago, with the majority of its breeds coming from North Africa and the Middle East.

The goat population in the country is estimated to be over 30 million. Ethiopia goat meat comes from indigenous types of goats. Wore goats –this breed originates from rift valley. They are mostly found in Kolla and weyna Dega areas. They are short and have a concave facial appearance and have short horns. They are mainly reared for milk and meat.

Afar goats-they are found in the northern region of Ethiopia. They have patchy coated color on long sharp-pointed horns. A large number consist of female for milk while male exist for cross-breeding and meat.

Abergele goats – they are reared for meat. They have a stocky body; red hair and male have spiral horns.

Long-eared Somali-they has long ears and are found in the lowland region of Ethiopia bordering Somalia.

Short-eared – they have short ears and are found in the Ogaden region.

 goats are reared in the lowlands and the highlands. They can survive in regions that are arid, dry to semi-arid. They can also survive in humid and sub-humid areas.

Herders build shades for the goat to give them ample environment, protection against predators and adverse weather conditions such as too much heat, rain, and wind.
