Ethiopia millet, especially finger millet species (Eleusine coracana) is one of the most important food crops for combating hunger next to sorghum as it thrives well in dry areas with little rain. The origin of finger millet is actually Ethiopia and Uganda. Farmers have practiced traditional agriculture of the crop for several millennia. Some of its other names include ‘famine food.’ This is actually testament to its importance as a food alternative in dry areas.

Millet provides a nutritional value of zero percent cholesterol for good heart health. It also comes with a dietary fiber for good digestion of 36 percent. The iron content is 16 percent of the daily value for oxygen transportation in blood. The crop has a high level of carbohydrates at 36 percent with a calorie count of 378 which makes it a good crop for food security in drought conditions. It also has at least 22 percent of the daily value of protein.

We source our Ethiopia millet from the southeastern parts of the country. The crop thrives here under dry conditions and it is important for food security. We only deal with traditional growers with between 05 and 1.5 hectares of land. They grow the crop next to sorghum and short season maize. The farmers apply farm-post manure in otherwise pastoralists’ location and do not use chemical sprays.

We hand-pick Ethiopia sorghum. We employ sickles to cut the tall stalks that can have multiple chaffs of grains at their crests. The next stage is to dry the millet chaffs to reduce the level of moisture to as low as 12 percent. We do this through forced air blowing that reduces the saturation levels in a few hours as sun-drying takes several days.

We use hand rubbing to thresh Ethiopia millet. This method is more accurate than machine threshing as our farmhands remove any sediment and foreign material at every turn. We then winnow the grains form any remaining debris. The process involves fan-aided pouring of the grains from above into the buckets below. Any light speck is blown away from the grains.

We pack Ethiopia millet soon as the sorting is over. We use jute bags that are hand woven for aeration purposes. We also employ propylene bags that have perforations for letting in air. We provide 50 to 90 kilo packages. We then silo-pack the sacks in layers that can be easy to remove and which solidify the load against damage.

Our storage for millet from Ethiopia is at an average 4° Celsius under the cool, dry, darkened environment of our warehouses. We also transport the grains under the same controlled temperatures to the neighboring port of Djibouti. The delivery by sea can take a few days depending on your location around the globe.
