Ethiopia chickpea (Cicer arietinum) is part of a leguminous family of crops that are rich in protein and pulse content. The popular name for the legume ranges from ceci bean to chana to Bengal gram. The major varieties that do well in the country include Desi and Kabuli. The Desi cultivar is usually sweet and the most popular and widespread in local farms. It features brown, yellow or greenish black colors, all having hard coats. The Kabuli variety comes in a beige color and can be pea-shaped or round. Its coat is normally light and soft to the touch. The two cultivars feature in meals as fresh vegetables and locals eat them in boiled, roasted or fried form. The crop is the fourth largest in total hectarage of all oil-producing legumes in the horn of Africa country.

The first evidence of the crop was 7500 years ago in the Middle-east. They may also have existed in later centuries , about 5500 years ago in eastern Mediterranean islands of Greece. It is not yet known how the crop came to Ethiopia. Currently, the country holds the mantle as the biggest producer of chickpeas in Africa and is number five globally.

We source our Ethiopia chickpeas in two areas of the country, namely Amhara and Oromia. The regions provide the growth requirements of alternately dry and wet. The two areas supply 90 percent of all chickpeas that come from the country. We also have family growers supplying us from the northern parts in Tigray and the southern parts which produce between 3 and 3.5 percent of the national capacity.

Each crop produces around 8.86 grams of protein. The starch content is quite high at 27.42 grams per serving while the dietary fiber is 7.6 grams. The highest vitamin is folate at 43 percent and Thiamine at 10 percent. Minerals include iron at 22 percent of the daily requirements with phosphorous and zinc supplying 24 percent and 16 percent of the daily value, respectively.

Before we pack our Ethiopia chickpeas, we carefully sort them from foreign material like dirt and pods. We also clean them so that they can reach your destination pure.

We pack chickpeas in custom produce cartons and crates. Each box can contain a minimum of 20 pounds. We also offer larger sizes of between 12 and 14 kilograms per box.
