Selina Wamucii provides high quality Kenya yams to the local and export market. We source the raw fresh Kenya yams from family growers from the country.

Kenya yam (Dioscorea spp) is a tuber in the grass family that is known for its hardy growth even in dry areas. It is a major source of starch. The plant consists of twining branches that grow best next to tall trees. They sprout yearly from tubers that are harvested for both food and export by the local communities. The origin of the yam (white variety) was in Southeast Asia but the current major producer is West Africa with 90 percent of the world production levels. In Kenya, the crop has been a highly productive food source but farmers have recently began to grow it in small plots of land for retail.

We source Kenya yams from family growers in Nyeri and Murang’a in Central as well as Eastern Kenya. In these areas, farmers often produce full sacks of 60-90 kilograms from single plants. We only deal with growers who follow organic farming practices. These practices include low or no use of pesticides and reliance on farmyard manure.

Yams are great choices for fighting multiple infections like the common cold. They also make wounds to heal fast due to the presence of extra-nutrients with antibiotic abilities. Some studies have also found anti-aging effect from regular consumption of the tuber. In nutrition, each piece provides 28 percent of the daily value of vitamin C. There is also 15 percent of the daily value of vitamin B-6 for proper metabolism. Potassium content for keeping a balance of the electrolytes in blood is high at 23 percent. The tuber also improves digestion as it provides 16 percent of the daily value of dietary fiber.

We harvest Kenya yams around 7 to 10 months after planting. Our produce agents guide farmers on uprooting tubers 30 days after the leaves starts wilting so that they are usually brown during the harvest. Our workers use digging tools to carefully extract the tubers off the soil bruise-free. Each season provides us with two picking times per plant. This is because the undeveloped tubers from the first harvest are usually ready in a few months afterward.

Soon after carting the Kenya yams to the packing shed, we clean them and cure them in the sun. This simple and natural drying method keeps off decay and enhances the shelf life of the produce. We also dry them mechanically at low temperatures of just above 32° Celsius. Because a fresh yam contains from 50 to 80% of water content, our curing brings it down to less than 21%.

We pack Kenya yams in loose packs of different flexible sizes. The smallest one is 11Kg while the biggest is 23Kg. All out weighing takes place at the warehouse and we indicate the net weight on the carton using the international metric system. Our cartons are telescopic fiberboard that are covered at the top to protect the produce. Each consists of interior film linings to keep the export well hydrated.

Due to the delicate nature of the corms, we follow responsible handling of yams. We forgo machine lifting into container pallets in favor of manual handling. This keeps the tubers free of any injuries.

We store Kenya yams in the storage room at temperatures above 12°C and below 15° C. To prevent chilling injury and dehydration, our storage room staff ensure that the temperature does not go below or above the optimum range. We transport the produce to the airport in Nairobi in designate trucks that maintain a cool environment for immediate transit. We ensure that the export arrives in your city in a day or two by air.

Therefore, if you would like a produce from the tropics with nearly similar nutrition as sweet potatoes, consider Kenya yams from Selina Wamucii. We source our tubers from family growers who have Global Good Agricultural Practices (GAP) certificates. For this reason, all the shipments are high quality, of uniform sizes per box and with no chemical residue.
