Description
Cryptostylis maculata (also called the Leopard Orchid, among many other common names) is a terrestrial orchid species found in New Guinea, Australia, and New Zealand. It has a single, slender, leafless stem, with a single flower at the top. The flower has a yellow labellum with a dark brown to black blotch in the center. It grows in moist, shady habitats, such as rainforest.
Flower, Seeds and Seedlings
Cryptostylis maculata has small, yellow-green flowers with a long, curved labellum. The seed capsules are small, ovoid and contain small, dark-brown seeds. The seedlings are small and have a single, oval cotyledon.
Cultivation and Propagation
Cryptostylis maculata can be propagated by seed or cuttings. Seeds should be sown in a well-draining soil mix and kept moist until germination. Cuttings should be taken from healthy, mature plants and planted in a moist, well-draining soil mix. Both methods should be kept in a warm, bright location with indirect sunlight.
