Rwanda rapeseed (Brassica napus) or canola is a cabbage family member with leguminous attributes that produces the third most common vegetable oil in the world. It contains a 50 percent concentration of erucic acid. It comes from a plant that bears light yellow flowers. In a field, the sunflower-like crop produces a beautiful sight of yellow that dwarfs the spare, green foliage on the plant’s upper stems. Other than oil production, rapeseed makes commercial fodder for animals. It is also a growing source of biofuel for propelling engines.

The origin of rapeseed may have been central Asia around 5500 B.C. It would later become widespread in Europe and other parts of the world.

We source Rwanda rapeseed from the northern parts of the country.  Here, family growers cultivate the crop in at least two acres of land under farmyard manure. They dispense with chemical sprays to reduce the effects of pesticides.

We harvest Rwanda rapeseed when it is relatively dry. By this time the moisture level is around 9 to 10 percent. We start when the crop has been in the field a week or 10 days from the time the flowers wither. We then look for seeds inside the pods on the side twigs: these should be black or dark-colored, have no sign of transparency and are firm to the touch.

After the mechanical harvester both harvests and threshes the pods, we then take the harvest to the curing shed for drying. The seeds will be completely cured on their 14th day after harvesting. By now about 30 or 40 percent of all harvested seeds will have altered to a deeper color. We let the moisture levels drop to 9 to 10 percent for storage purposes.

We may opt to roast the rapeseed to a crisp blackish-golden color for better preservation. We oven-roast the seeds at low temperatures to ensure that they do not lose their moisture levels during this period.
