Description
Gnaphalium americanum (also called American cudweed, among many other common names) is an annual herbaceous plant in the family Asteraceae. It has small white flowers with a single yellow center and a toothed leaf margin. It is native to North America, and it typically grows in meadows, grasslands, and disturbed areas.
Uses & Benefits
Gnaphalium americanum is used as an ornamental plant in gardens and as a medicinal plant for treating digestive issues.
Flower, Seeds and Seedlings
The flower of Gnaphalium americanum is a yellow, daisy-like flower. The seeds are small and black. The seedlings are thin and have a single stem with a few leaves.
Cultivation and Propagation
Gnaphalium americanum can be propagated by seed or division. Seeds should be sown in late winter or early spring in a cold frame or in a seedbed. When they are large enough to handle, prick the seedlings out into individual pots and plant them out in the summer. Division is best carried out in the spring, as the plants come into growth, although it can also be done in the autumn. Larger clumps can be divided using two forks, the divisions being planted out direct into their permanent positions.
