Description
Dendrophorbium silvani (also called 'Silvan's dendrophorbium', among many other common names) is a perennial herbaceous plant native to the mountains of Central and Eastern Europe. It has a basal rosette of leaves and yellow flowers with a single petal. It is found in open woodlands and scrublands.
Uses & Benefits
Dendrophorbium silvani is used as an ornamental plant in gardens. It is also used as a medicinal plant to treat digestive issues and skin conditions.
Flower, Seeds and Seedlings
Dendrophorbium silvani has small, yellow flowers in clusters. The seeds are small and dark brown in color. The seedlings are small and have a single pair of leaves.
Cultivation and Propagation
Dendrophorbium silvani can be propagated by seed or division. Seeds should be sown in spring in a cold frame. When they are large enough to handle, prick the seedlings out into individual pots and grow them on in the greenhouse for at least their first winter. Plant them out into their permanent positions in late spring or early summer, after the last expected frosts. Division in spring or autumn. Larger clumps can be replanted direct into their permanent positions, though it is best to pot up smaller clumps and grow them on in a cold frame until they are rooting well. Plant them out in the spring.
