Description
Gypsophila uralensis (also called Ural Baby's Breath, among many other common names) is a small, herbaceous perennial plant with white flowers that is native to the Ural Mountains region. It grows in dry, rocky soils and is often found in meadows, pastures, and roadsides.
Uses & Benefits
Gypsophila uralensis is used as an ornamental plant in gardens and as a cut flower in bouquets. It is also used in traditional Chinese medicine for the treatment of fever, headache, and sore throat.
Flower, Seeds and Seedlings
Gypsophila uralensis has small white flowers with five petals and a yellow centre. The seeds are small and black. The seedlings are thin and delicate.
Cultivation and Propagation
Gypsophila uralensis can be propagated by seed or cuttings. Seeds should be sown in spring in a cold frame. When they are large enough to handle, prick the seedlings out into individual pots and plant them out in the summer. Cuttings of half-ripe wood, 5 - 8cm with a heel, July/August in a frame. Plant out in late summer or early autumn.
