Description

Gypsophila umbricola (also called Umbricola Baby's Breath, among many other common names) is an annual or biennial plant that grows up to 90 cm tall. It has linear, oblanceolate leaves and white flowers. It is native to Europe and Asia and is found in dry grasslands, rocky slopes and meadows.

Gypsophila umbricola is used as an ornamental plant in gardens and as a cut flower in bouquets. It is also used in traditional Chinese medicine for the treatment of fever, headache, and sore throat.

Cultivation and Propagation

Gypsophila umbricola can be propagated by seed or cuttings. Seeds should be sown in spring in a cold frame. When they are large enough to handle, prick the seedlings out into individual pots and plant them out in the summer. Cuttings of half-ripe wood, 5 - 8cm with a heel, July/August in a frame. Plant out in late summer or early autumn.
