Description
Gypsophila saponarioides (also called Soapwort Baby's Breath, among many other common names) is an annual or biennial plant of the Caryophyllaceae family. It has a low-growing habit, with small, white flowers and linear leaves. It is native to the Caucasus region, and is found in dry, rocky habitats.
Flower, Seeds and Seedlings
The flower of Gypsophila saponarioides is a small, white, star-shaped flower with five petals and a yellow center. The seed is a small, black, oval-shaped seed. The seedlings are small, white, and have a single, oval-shaped leaf.
Cultivation and Propagation
Gypsophila saponarioides can be propagated by seed or cuttings. Seeds should be sown in spring in a cold frame. When they are large enough to handle, prick the seedlings out into individual pots and plant them out in the summer. Cuttings of half-ripe wood, 5 - 8cm with a heel, July/August in a frame. Plant out in late summer or early autumn.
