Farm gate prices vary across regions
Cocoa farmers living in the cocoa-producing region of Wewak in East Sepik province were receiving a record 1500 kino ($385) per 64 kg bag or $7.07 per kg on March 2, 2024. This was one of the highest price, including neighboring Indonesia. The reigning global shortage and trader competition in this region were the reasons for the astronomical price climb, reported Post-Courier.
At the same time, western provinces were stuck with the average price of between 450 kino ($115.74) and 480 ($123.46) kino per 64 kg bag. In comparison with East Sepik, the rest of PNG has relatively stable supplies, hence the price stability.
Papua New Guinea not only grows but produces its own cocoa products. One such national provider is Paradise Foods, which makes the popular Queen Emma cocoa and chocolate products. The company sources from farmers at a rate above normal prices. In 2020, for instance, it made chocolate by buying cocoa beans from farmers for up to 600 kino ($154.43) kino per 60 kg bag, according to The National newspaper.
