5-Year Farm Gate Prices Steadiness
Data by the government of Malaysia shows that between 2018 and 2022, Malaysia’s cocoa bean prices at the farm gate have been inching up steadily apart from a minimal dip in 2021.
In 2018, cocoa beans sold at 6,305 ringgit ($1,325.31) a tonne. Then the price peaked at 6,796 ringgit ($1,428.52) a tonne in 2019, before it reached a 5-year apex of 6,808 ringgit ($1,431.04) in 2020. The 2021 producer price declined slightly to 6,406 ringgit ($1,346.54) before a steady climb to 7,039 ringgit ($1,479.6) in 2022.

Cocoa production in Malaysia takes place in three key areas that include Sabah, Sarawak and the Peninsula. The total cultivation area in mid-2023 was 5,985 hectares, but the government planted 200 acres more acres later that year.
In June 2023, Sabah led in acreage with 3,444 hectares, while Sarawak came second with 1,454 hectares, against the Peninsula’s 1,087 hectares.
