Saffron was initially grown in ancient Greece from where it spread to other parts of the world. Currently, the plant grows in Morocco, India, Greece, and Iran. The botanical name for saffron is Crocus sativus. The saffron plant belongs to the Iridaceae family, and it multiplies vegetatively. The plant grows to 30cm in height. The plant grows in well-drained, moderately fertile soils and warm weather climates. The plant grows in underground corms of 5cm from which the stem and flowers grow.
