Elaeis guineesis is the scientific name for the African oil palm. The African oil palm originated on the west and southwest on the African continent. The plant is characterized by multiple stems that can reach heights of up to 20 meters. The stems of the oil palm have pinnate leaves of between 3 to 5 meters long.

Oil palms thrive in humid and tropical areas. Temperatures of these areas range from 22°C to a maximum of 33°C. Oil palms can grow in a wide variety of soils, but they excel in fertile loamy soil. Palm oil in Ghana is produced in areas that experience north of 1200mm of bimodal rainfall.
