The Sudan live sheep population is estimated to be 51.555 million. The desert sheep are the primary type of sheep reared by the Arab nomads. The country exports live sheep worth $7.067 million annually. The country exports over 4.3 million live sheep annually. The sheep rearing is mainly in the northern part of Sudan. They are reared strictly within the semi-desert belt of Sudan.

The leading destination of Sudan live sheep is Saudi Arabia, closely followed by Yemen and Gulf states.

The Sudan nomads mainly domesticate the desert type of sheep. The examples of desert sheep include;

The Arab kind of sheep –they have a woolly coat and short legs.

Sudan live sheep are available throughout the year.

Nomads built temporary shades for their sheep. They ensure the shades are clean, dry and have a proper drainage system. The roofed shades protect the sheep from adverse weather conditions as like extreme desert winds.

Veterinarians are frequently called to administer vaccines to sheep before they migrate to look for pasture and water.

Boreholes and oasis are the primary source of water for the sheep in the desert.

Sudan sheep are purchased directly from the nomads. Designed tracks then ship them to the port ready for export to the international market. Inspect the sheep before they are loaded to the trucks to ensure that sick and injured are singled out.

Middlemen in Elsalam in Omdurman central market in Khartoum are also used to obtain the sheep.

The best time for selling the sheep is before the Hajj season.
