There are several date fruit farms in Namibia that provide unique-tasting fruits that can be consumed directly or used for the manufacture of wine. The Namibia dates species is soft and often green in colour when it is ready for harvest. Careful handling of these fruits is vital because they take a long period before they are suitable for consumption and commercial use.

The fruit was first introduced to Namibia during the German conquest of the area that subsequently led to Catholic priests living in the area. The religious heads of the Christian Churches not only wanted to spread religion, but they wanted to make use of Namibia’s unique climatic features to grow dates. As a result, they introduced a fruit that was native to the Middle East and has been a significant crop for Namibia ever since.

Most people around the world consume dates directly because of their sweetness and succulence. They are an excellent source for fructose, glucose and sucrose, making them a perfect fruit to include in a diet. Similarly, the fruit is also used to create a wine of which is widely consumed around the world.

Namibia dates are sold in small fruit boxes, although it is possible to get a much bulkier order. The export of these fruits from Namibia earns a lucrative income for the farmers and, in turn, they ensure the quality remains distinctive to the country. It is possible to find wine products in most retail outlets from dates grown in Namibia.

In Namibia, dates are grown in the winter season which is between June and September and can take anything between 4 years to 8 years to bear fruit. The harsh arid conditions in Namibia have not been a problem in terms of growing the date palm trees because the soil is well-drained and there is a vast water source in the shape of the Orange River. The sandy-loam soils of the area are perfect for the growth of the fruit tree because they have an optimum pH level between 8 and 11.

The fruit tree must not be exposed to direct sunlight and, they are even covered before they start to mature. Also, a lot of protection needs to be given to them from birds and other pests that might otherwise ruin the harvest.

Dates that are used for commercial purposes are typically harvested after seven years from germination. The stems of the date palm trees are thinned and removed from the main tree so that the fruits can be plucked. This has to be done manually so that different types of dates can also be separated.

Transportation for export must be done carefully because the fruits must be stored in temperatures below 0°C. They are packed into crates for export and shipping to other countries can take a week.
