The Mali guava tree is an evergreen, fast-growing shrub that produces a small, oval, or round tropical fruit. The guava fruit has a pink, sometimes white flesh, and edible seeds. The leaves of the guava tree can be used to make herbal tea and its extract can be used as a medical supplement. The fruit has a strong, unique smell.

Locally, the guava is known as lemon guava or common guava. It is scientifically called psidium guajava.

Under optimum conditions, Mali guava trees grow up to a height of 10 feet with a slender trunk that is about 20 centimeters in diameter. The tiny breeds grow to at least 3 feet. The fruit of the guava tree is between 4 centimeters and 12 centimeters long, depending on the species.

Red Fleshed: The trees of this variety are about 5 meters in height and have very spread branches. Its fruit is oval with yellow skin and pink flesh. 

L49 (Lucknow-49): This type produces a round fruit with greenish-yellow skin that’s fairly rough. It has white, pulpy flesh and has very few seeds making it medium keeping. This type of guava is mostly for table purposes.

There are three distinct flowering seasons identified in Mali for commercial growth. However, the crop is available around the year in most parts of the country. Flowering occurs twice in a year; February and June. Fruiting occurs between June and September.
