The islands of Cape Verde are known for ‘big-game’ fishing; which is the type of fishing that involves larger fish like tuna. The Cape Verde tuna are fished for recreational activities like sport fishing, contests as well as for food.

Did you know that the tuna can maintain certain parts of its body at a temperature that is higher than its encircling waters? This means they can swim in a variety of habitats and achieve a range of hunting capabilities.

Thunnini is the tribe to which tuna; a saltwater fish belongs. Thunnus albacares is the scientific name of the yellowfin tuna that found in Cape Verde. A very active predator with a sleek and streamlined body best describes the Cape Verde tuna. The fish has two dorsal fins that are closely spaced and a tail that is curved like the crescent moon and tapered to tips that are pointed. For camouflage, it has a metallic dark blue dorsal side and a whitish or silvery ventral side or underside.

Cape Verde waters offer a supportive environment for deep-sea fishing to depths of approximately 100 metres. It offers a large variety and quantity because of the excellent location of the Cape Verdean archipelago. It is possible to fish from all the islands of Cape Verde, but the preferred ones are Sao Nicolau, Sao Vicente, Sao Antao and Maio.

The yellowfin tuna is a standard variety in Cape Verde. It is widely known for its portrayal of speed and strength during the fighting and may weigh up to 150kg. In many areas of Cape Verde, it is famous for sport fishing. The name yellowfin is because of the colour of its fin, and it is about 2m in length. Yellowfin is widely fished for commercial purposes and is found in warm seas.

Albacore, on the other hand, is less gigantic but has endurance and speed. Longfin tuna is a smaller subspecies of the Bluefin tuna, which is the largest and the truly bony fish.

The fishing season in Cape Verde varies moderately throughout the year save for January and February when the winds are strong and may cause difficulty. This to mean that tunas are available throughout. However, the best months to fish the yellowfin tuna is September to December; which make for the autumn and winter seasons of the country. That said, July to November makes for the high fishing season and the low season is January to April.

Tunas in Cape Verde are mainly fished using the trolling method which gets accomplished by using artificial fish, small fish or squid. In other words, trolling is hauling with lighter material. Also, the traditional fishing rod is used once in a while.

Cape Verde tunas require cold storage warehousing conditions and are put in reefer containers. There is a pre-trip inspection, and most get exported either frozen, fresh or canned. During shipment, the temperatures for the frozen tuna are -18°c or less or the fish is transported while held in refrigerated brine.
