Description
Pinus arunachalensis (also called 'Arunachal Pine', among many other common names) is an evergreen tree that typically grows up to 30 m tall. It is native to India, Bhutan, and parts of Southeast Asia. It is found in moist, evergreen forests and along streams and rivers.
Uses & Benefits
Pinus arunachalensis is used as an ornamental plant in gardens and as a hedge plant. It is also used as a source of timber and resin for various industrial applications.
Flower, Seeds and Seedlings
Pinus arunachalensis has small, yellow-green flowers that are clustered together. The seeds are small, brown, and cone-shaped. The seedlings are small and slender, with a single, needle-like leaf.
Cultivation and Propagation
Pinus arunachalensis can be propagated by seed or division. Seeds should be sown in spring or early summer in a cold frame. When they are large enough to handle, prick the seedlings out into individual pots and plant them out in the summer. Division is best carried out in spring or autumn. Larger divisions can be planted out direct into their permanent positions, though it is best to pot up smaller divisions and grow them on in a cold frame until they are rooting well. Plant them out in the spring.
Where to Find Pinus arunachalensis
Pinus arunachalensis is native to the Eastern Himalayas in India and can be found in the states of Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, and Sikkim.
