Description
Orthotrichum hispanicum (also called Orthotrichum, among many other common names) is a species of liverwort in the Lejeuneaceae family. It is found in the tropical regions of the world, growing in moist and shady habitats.
Uses & Benefits
Orthotrichum hispanicum is used as an ornamental plant in gardens and as a source of food for livestock.
Flower, Seeds and Seedlings
Orthotrichum hispanicum has small, yellow-green flowers and small, black seeds. The seedlings have a single, small leaf that is divided into two lobes.
Cultivation and Propagation
Orthotrichum hispanicum is a small, evergreen, perennial liverwort that can be propagated by division or spore sowing. It prefers moist, shady conditions and can be grown in a pot or in a shady garden bed. When propagating by division, divide the plant into small pieces and replant in moist soil. When propagating by spore sowing, collect the spores and sow them on a moist, sterile medium. Keep the medium moist and in a shady area until the spores germinate and the new plants are established.
