Description
Platanthera lacera (also called Slender Fringed Orchid, among many other common names) is a species of orchid native to North America. It is found in moist meadows, bogs, and wet woods, from Newfoundland to Alaska, south to Pennsylvania and Oregon. It is a perennial herbaceous plant growing from a thick, fleshy rhizome. The leaves are basal, lanceolate, and up to 20 cm long. The inflorescence is a terminal raceme of up to 30 fragrant, white to pink flowers. The sepals and petals are fused and form a hood over the column.
Flower, Seeds and Seedlings
The Platanthera lacera flower is white or pinkish-white, with a yellow-green lip. The seed is a small, dark brown nutlet. The seedlings are small, with a single, long, narrow leaf.
Cultivation and Propagation
Platanthera lacera is a hardy perennial that can be grown in full sun or partial shade. It prefers moist, well-drained soil and can tolerate some drought. Propagation is by division or seed. Division should be done in early spring or late fall. Seeds should be sown in a cold frame in the spring and can take up to two years to germinate.
