Description
Epidendrum macuchiense (also called the Macuchi epidendrum, among many other common names) is a species of orchid native to the mountains of South America. It has a basal rosette of leaves and a single stem with a white, five-petalled flower. It grows in alpine meadows and rocky slopes at altitudes of 2,000-4,000 m.
Uses & Benefits
Epidendrum macuchiense is used as an ornamental plant in gardens and parks, and is also used for its medicinal properties.
Flower, Seeds and Seedlings
The flower of Epidendrum macuchiense is white with a yellow lip. The seed is small and round, and the seedlings are slender and have a single leaf.
Cultivation and Propagation
Epidendrum macuchiense is an epiphytic orchid. It is propagated by seed or division. Seeds should be sown as soon as they are ripe in a cold frame. When they are large enough to handle, prick the seedlings out into individual pots and plant them out in the summer. Division can be done in spring or autumn. Larger divisions can be planted out direct into their permanent positions. We recommend covering the soil with a mulch of well-rotted manure or compost in winter.
