Description
Catasetum villegasii (also called Villegas' Catasetum, among many other common names) is a species of orchid native to Colombia and Venezuela. It is found in wet montane forests, at elevations of 1000-2000 meters. It has a single, thin, erect stem, with a single, large, green-brown leaf at the base. The flower has a yellow-green color, and is shaped like a star.
Flower, Seeds and Seedlings
Catasetum villegasii has large, showy, fragrant flowers with yellow and brown petals and sepals. The seed is round and black, and the seedlings are small and green.
Cultivation and Propagation
Catasetum villegasii can be propagated by seed or division. Seeds should be sown in a well-draining soil mix and kept moist. Division should be done in the spring or fall when the plant is actively growing. Both methods should be kept in a warm, humid environment with indirect light.
