Description
Bulbophyllum tentaculiferum (also called Tentacle-bearing Bulbophyllum, among many other common names) is an epiphytic orchid species found in India, Sri Lanka, Myanmar, Thailand, and Vietnam. It has a long, thin rhizome with small pseudobulbs and long, thin roots. The leaves are linear and fleshy. The flowers are small and white, with a yellowish-green lip.
Uses & Benefits
Bulbophyllum tentaculiferum is used as an ornamental plant and to treat fever, rheumatism, and malaria.
Flower, Seeds and Seedlings
The flower of Bulbophyllum tentaculiferum is a small, white, star-shaped flower with six petals. The seed is a small, black, oval-shaped nut. The seedlings are small and thin, with a single stem and two small, oval-shaped leaves.
Cultivation and Propagation
Bulbophyllum tentaculiferum can be propagated by seed or division. Seeds should be sown in spring in a cold frame and the seedlings planted out in the summer. Division in spring or autumn. Larger divisions can be planted out direct into their permanent positions. We have found it best to pot up the smaller divisions and grow them on in a lightly shaded position in a cold frame, planting them out once they are well established in the summer.
