Description
Bulbophyllum insectiferum (also called Insect-bearing Bulbophyllum, among many other common names) is an epiphytic orchid with a creeping rhizome and a tuft of leaves. It is native to tropical Asia and grows in moist, shady forests.
Uses & Benefits
Bulbophyllum insectiferum is used as an ornamental plant in gardens and as a windbreak. It is also used to make a tea that is said to have medicinal properties.
Flower, Seeds and Seedlings
Bulbophyllum insectiferum has small, yellow flowers that are clustered together in a head-like shape. The seed is a small, dark brown nut-like structure. The seedlings are slender and have a single, long, narrow leaf.
Cultivation and Propagation
Bulbophyllum insectiferum can be propagated by division or by seed. Division should be done in the spring or fall when the plant is actively growing. The plant should be carefully dug up and divided into smaller clumps which can then be replanted in a moist, sandy soil mix. Seeds should be sown in a well-draining, sandy soil mix and kept moist until germination.
