Description
Bulbophyllum hystricinum (also called the Bristly Bulbophyllum, among many other common names) is a species of orchid native to Southeast Asia and the western Pacific islands. It is a small epiphytic orchid with a single, thin, wiry stem and a single, thin, wiry leaf. It has small, yellowish-green flowers, each with a long, thin, bristly lip. It is found growing in the canopy of tropical rainforests, often on the bark of trees.
Flower, Seeds and Seedlings
Bulbophyllum hystricinum has small, yellow flowers that are arranged in clusters. Its seeds are small, dark brown and round. The seedlings have short, slender stems and small, narrow leaves.
Cultivation and Propagation
Bulbophyllum hystricinum is a hardy, evergreen epiphyte native to tropical regions. It can be propagated from seed or cuttings. To propagate from seed, sow the seeds in a well-draining soil mix and keep them moist. To propagate from cuttings, take a cutting from a mature plant and place it in a pot filled with a well-draining soil mix. Keep the soil moist and the cutting should root in a few weeks.
