Description
Sphaeranthus randii (also called Rand's buttonweed, among many other common names) is an annual herbaceous plant in the family Asteraceae. It has small white flowers with a single yellow center and a toothed leaf margin. It is native to South Africa, and it typically grows in dry, rocky areas.
Uses & Benefits
Sphaeranthus randii is used as an ornamental plant in gardens and as a ground cover. It is also used to make herbal teas and as a medicinal plant for treating digestive disorders.
Flower, Seeds and Seedlings
The flowers of Sphaeranthus randii are small, white and star-shaped, with five petals. The seeds are small and black, and the seedlings are thin and delicate.
Cultivation and Propagation
Sphaeranthus randii can be propagated by seed or division. Seeds should be sown in late winter or early spring in a cold frame or in a seedbed. When they are large enough to handle, prick the seedlings out into individual pots and plant them out in the summer. Division is best carried out in the spring, as the plants come into growth, although it can also be done in the autumn. Larger clumps can be divided using two forks, the divisions being planted out direct into their permanent positions.
