Description
Senecio speciosus (also called Showy Groundsel, among many other common names) is an herbaceous perennial plant native to the western United States. It has bright yellow flowers and grows in dry, rocky soils in open meadows and along roadsides.
Uses & Benefits
Hypnum leskeoides is used as a soil stabilizer and erosion control, and can be used as a mulch to help retain moisture in the soil. It is also used in the production of potpourri and as a decorative element in flower arrangements.
Flower, Seeds and Seedlings
Senecio speciosus has bright yellow flowers with white centers. Its seeds are small and black, and its seedlings are small and green.
Cultivation and Propagation
Senecio speciosus is a perennial herb that can be propagated from seeds or cuttings. It prefers full sun and well-drained soil. It can be grown in containers or in the ground. To propagate from seeds, sow the seeds in a seed tray filled with moist soil. Place the seed tray in a warm, sunny location and keep the soil moist. Once the seedlings have emerged, transplant them into individual pots. To propagate from cuttings, take a cutting from a healthy plant and remove the lower leaves. Plant the cutting in a pot filled with moist soil and place it in a warm, sunny location. Keep the soil moist and the cutting should root within a few weeks.
