Description
Senecio geniorum (also called Geni's Senecio, among many other common names) is an annual herb that grows up to 40 cm tall. It is native to South Africa and can be found in grasslands and open woodlands.
Uses & Benefits
Senecio geniorum is an ornamental plant commonly used in gardens and landscaping. It is also known to attract butterflies and bees, making it a great addition to any garden.
Flower, Seeds and Seedlings
Senecio geniorum has small, yellow flowers with four petals and a hairy calyx. The seeds are small and black. The seedlings have a single pair of oval-shaped cotyledons.
Cultivation and Propagation
Senecio geniorum can be propagated by seed or division. Seeds should be sown in spring in a cold frame or in pots in a cold greenhouse. When they are large enough to handle, prick the seedlings out into individual pots and grow them on in the greenhouse for at least their first winter. Plant out in late spring or early summer. Division in spring. Larger divisions can be planted out direct into their permanent positions. We have found it best to pot up the smaller divisions and grow them on in light shade in a cold frame until they are well established before planting them out in late spring or early summer.
Where to Find Senecio geniorum
Senecio geniorum is native to the Mediterranean region. It can be found in dry, rocky habitats such as cliffs and rocky slopes.
