Description
Pertya phylicoides (also called Mountain Boxwood, among many other common names) is a small evergreen shrub native to the Himalayas. It has small, leathery leaves and white flowers. It is found in rocky, mountainous habitats.
Uses & Benefits
Pertya phylicoides is an ornamental plant that is often used in gardens and landscaping. It is also known to attract butterflies and bees, making it a great addition to any garden.
Flower, Seeds and Seedlings
The flower of Pertya phylicoides is white, with five petals and a yellow center. The seed is a small, dark brown nut. The seedlings are small and green, with a single stem and two small leaves.
Cultivation and Propagation
Pertya phylicoides can be propagated by seed or division. Seeds should be sown in spring in a cold frame or in pots in a cold greenhouse. When they are large enough to handle, prick the seedlings out into individual pots and grow them on in the greenhouse for at least their first winter. Plant out in late spring or early summer. Division in spring. Larger divisions can be planted out direct into their permanent positions. We have found it best to pot up the smaller divisions and grow them on in light shade in a cold frame until they are well established before planting them out in late spring or early summer.
Where to Find Pertya phylicoides
Pertya phylicoides can be found in the Mediterranean region, including parts of Spain, Italy, and Greece.
