Description
Ligularia atkinsonii (also called Atkinson's Ligularia, among many other common names) is a perennial plant native to the Himalayas, with large, toothed leaves and yellow flowers. It is found in moist, shady habitats, such as woodland edges and riverbanks.
Uses & Benefits
Ligularia atkinsonii is a popular ornamental plant that is often used in gardens and landscaping. It is also known to attract butterflies and bees, making it a great addition to any garden.
Flower, Seeds and Seedlings
The flower of Ligularia atkinsonii is yellow, with a single row of petals and a yellow center. The seed is a small, dark brown nut. The seedlings are small and green, with a single stem and two small leaves.
Cultivation and Propagation
Ligularia atkinsonii can be propagated by seed or division. Seeds should be sown in spring in a cold frame or in pots in a cold greenhouse. When they are large enough to handle, prick the seedlings out into individual pots and grow them on in the greenhouse for at least their first winter. Plant out in late spring or early summer. Division in spring. Larger divisions can be planted out direct into their permanent positions. We have found it best to pot up the smaller divisions and grow them on in light shade in a cold frame until they are well established before planting them out in late spring or early summer.
