Description
Hieracium onychodontum (also called Onychodont Hawkweed, among many other common names) is an annual herb that grows up to 30 cm tall. It is native to Europe and can be found in grasslands and open woodlands.
Uses & Benefits
Hieracium onychodontum is used as an ornamental plant, as a ground cover, and as a medicinal plant to treat skin diseases and wounds.
Flower, Seeds and Seedlings
Hieracium onychodontum has small, yellow flowers with four petals and a hairy calyx. The seeds are small and black. The seedlings have a single pair of oval-shaped cotyledons.
Cultivation and Propagation
Hieracium onychodontum can be propagated by seed or division. Seeds should be sown in spring in a cold frame or in pots in a cold greenhouse. When they are large enough to handle, prick the seedlings out into individual pots and grow them on in the greenhouse for at least their first winter. Plant out in late spring or early summer. Division in spring. Larger divisions can be planted out direct into their permanent positions. We have found it best to pot up the smaller divisions and grow them on in light shade in a cold frame until they are well established before planting them out in late spring or early summer.
Where to Find Hieracium onychodontum
Hieracium onychodontum is native to the mountains of Central and Southern Europe. It can be found in meadows, pastures, and on rocky slopes.
