Description
Gutierrezia elegans (also called 'Elegant Snakeweed', among many other common names) is a species of flowering plant in the Asteraceae family. It is native to South America. It typically grows in meadows, grasslands, and disturbed areas.
Uses & Benefits
Gutierrezia elegans is used as an ornamental plant, and is also used in traditional medicine to treat digestive and respiratory problems.
Flower, Seeds and Seedlings
Gutierrezia elegans has small, yellow flowers that are clustered together. The seeds are small and black. The seedlings have small, oval-shaped leaves that are covered in fine hairs.
Cultivation and Propagation
Gutierrezia elegans can be propagated by seed or division. Seeds should be sown in spring or early summer in a cold frame. When they are large enough to handle, prick the seedlings out into individual pots and plant them out in the summer. Division in spring or autumn. Larger divisions can be planted out direct into their permanent positions, though it is best to pot up smaller divisions and grow them on in a cold frame until they are established.
