Description
Grindelia ciliata (also called Fringed Grindelia, among many other common names) is a perennial herbaceous plant native to the western United States. It has a basal rosette of leaves, and its stems are covered with white hairs. It grows in dry grasslands, steppes, and mountain meadows.
Uses & Benefits
Grindelia ciliata is used as an ornamental plant in gardens and is also used in traditional medicine to treat various ailments.
Flower, Seeds and Seedlings
The flower of Grindelia ciliata is a yellow, daisy-like flower with five petals. The seed is a small, black, triangular seed. The seedling has a single, oval-shaped leaf.
Cultivation and Propagation
Grindelia ciliata can be propagated by seed or division. Seeds should be sown in spring in a cold frame. When they are large enough to handle, prick the seedlings out into individual pots and plant them out in the summer. Division in spring or autumn is also possible. Larger clumps can be replanted direct into their permanent positions, though it is best to pot up smaller clumps and grow them on in a cold frame until they are rooting well. Plant them out in the spring.
