Saudi Wheat Production - Analysis
Before checking out the wheat rate in Saudi Arabia, you may want to know a few facts around production, imports and consumption. Below are key facts:
Consumption
Wheat or al-Aysh in Arabic is exclusively used as human food in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA). All production and imports go into human consumption, with no animal feed reserves. In the 2020-21 market year, consumption hit 3.5 million tonnes while in the 2024-25 market year it was estimated at 4.54 million tonnes. Consumption per capita for whole wheat grain was at 133.14 kg per person per year in the 2024-25 season.
Imports
Saudi Arabia imports over 3.9 million tonnes of wheat, as of the 2023-24 market year. 2.312 million tonnes of this total shipped in from Russia. Beforehand, total imports used to surpass 5 million tonnes due to the then low domestic production.
Foreign Leased Farms
KSA also grows wheat in leased land abroad in countries such as Australia, Ukraine, Brazil and Canada. The Saudi Agricultural and Livestock Investment Company (SALIC) offers tenders to interested parties. In the 2024-25 season, SALIC bought as much as 775,000 tonnes from these overseas farms.
Domestic Production
Saudi farmers grow wheat in small-to-medium plots of land of a restricted quota system at maximum 50 hectares per farmer. This is a system where a total of 5,000 farmers, as of 2025, grow and sell their produce directly to the government. These producers currently have a capacity to produce up to 1.5 million tonnes, according to the government’s estimates for the 2024-25 market year. They mostly grow the Yecoro rojo hard winter wheat variety.
