Mozambique avocado, just like all avocados from Africa, is prized for its high nutrient value and is mostly added to various dishes thanks to its great taste. It is used as the main ingredient in guacamole. Mozambique avocado fruit is known for its oily nature hence containing healthy fats, which is a good substitute for artificial oily foods. It is characterized by a rough green skin and lighter green or greenish-yellow inside with a large seed in the middle. The avocado tree is relatively frost-sensitive and grows up to 30 meters long. The fruits only ripen after being harvested with some, in rare cases, ripening while on the tree. If not harvested at maturity, avocado fruits will fall by themselves and begin the ripening process. The trees start producing tress after 5 to 15 years. Commercial avocado farming in Mozambique was introduced in 2015. The first export was made in 2018 and was planted in 500 hectares of total land. Each year new avocado trees are planted in approximately 100-hectare land. Farmers in Mozambique are mainly focused on Hass, Fuerte, Hass, Gwen, and Pinkerton. Many consumers around the world have a preference for the Hass variety, also known as alligator pear due to ita rough skin. Its flavor is quite rich and has intense taste than the other types. Hass’s skin is easy to peel and pale compared to other varieties.
The trees require a warm temperature between 70 degrees and 200 degrees Celsius, with the optimum range being 150 degrees. Avocado trees are frost resistant and do not thrive well in cold areas.
Like other types of fruits, avocados need water to bear fruits, approximately 50 inches of rain per year with the young trees requiring more.
Mozambique avocado mostly do not change color. Therefore, they can be picked when large enough/mature and stored at room temperature for 7 to 9 days. After one week, the skin will become soft and ready for consumption.
The avocados are harvested gently by the hand and should not be dropped hard to avoid breaking the unripe fruit. Alternatively, a prone pruner is used to pick fruits that cannot be picked by hand.
Unripe avocados are packed in 4kg gross cartons called lugs and sealed carefully for export. Mozambique exported its first avocado fruit in 2018, majoring in fuerte and hass varieties.
