Description
Acer wilsonii (also called Wilson's Maple, among many other common names) is a deciduous tree that can reach up to 15 meters in height. It has a broad, rounded crown and its bark is gray-brown with shallow fissures. It is native to China and grows in moist, shady forests at elevations of 1000-2000 meters.
Uses & Benefits
Acer wilsonii is a species of maple tree that is native to eastern Asia. It is often used as an ornamental tree in gardens and parks due to its attractive foliage and showy flowers. It is also used for timber and as a source of food for wildlife.
Flower, Seeds and Seedlings
Acer wilsonii has small yellow flowers that are clustered in groups of three. The seeds are small and oval-shaped, with a thin, papery seed coat. The seedlings are small, with a single pair of oval-shaped leaves.
Cultivation and Propagation
Acer wilsonii can be propagated by seed, cuttings, or layering. Seeds should be sown in spring or early summer in a cold frame. When they are large enough to handle, prick the seedlings out into individual pots and grow them on in the greenhouse for at least their first winter. Plant them out into their permanent positions in late spring or early summer, after the last expected frosts. Cuttings of half-ripe wood, 5 - 8cm with a heel, July/August in a frame. Layering in late summer. Takes 1 year.
