Description

Acer tutcheri (also called the Tutcher's maple, among many other common names) is a deciduous tree native to East Asia. It has an upright habit and can reach up to 25 meters in height. Its bark is smooth and grayish-brown in color. It is found in forests, open woodlands, and along streams in its native regions.

Cultivation and Propagation

Acer tutcheri can be propagated by seed, cuttings, or layering. Seeds should be sown in spring or early summer in a cold frame. When they are large enough to handle, prick the seedlings out into individual pots and grow them on in the greenhouse for at least their first winter. Plant them out into their permanent positions in late spring or early summer, after the last expected frosts. Cuttings of half-ripe wood, 5 - 8cm with a heel, July/August in a frame. Layering in late summer. Takes 1 year.
