Flower, Seeds and Seedlings
The flower of Polytrichum xanthopilum is a small, white, bell-shaped flower. The seed is a small, black, oval-shaped seed. The seedlings are small, green, and have a single leaf.
Cultivation and Propagation
Polytrichum xanthopilum can be propagated by division or by seed. Division is best done in early spring or late fall. Seeds should be sown in spring in a cold frame. When they are large enough to handle, prick the seedlings out into individual pots and grow them on in the greenhouse for at least their first winter. Plant them out into their permanent positions in late spring or early summer, after the last expected frosts.
