Description
Sasa pulcherrima (also called Pulcherrima Bamboo, among many other common names) is a perennial evergreen grass native to Japan and Korea. It is a low-growing, clumping grass with thick, leathery leaves and short, stiff culms. It grows in moist, shady areas and is often used as a ground cover or in rock gardens.
Uses & Benefits
Sasa pulcherrima is used in traditional Chinese medicine for treating rheumatism, hypertension, and other ailments. It is also used as a food source and in landscaping.
Flower, Seeds and Seedlings
The flowers of Sasa pulcherrima are small and white, with yellow anthers. The seeds are small, black and round, and the seedlings are short and slender.
Cultivation and Propagation
Sasa pulcherrima is a low-growing, evergreen bamboo native to Japan. It grows in dense clumps of stems that reach up to 1m tall. The leaves are oval-shaped, dark green in colour and have a silvery-white underside. The stems are green and have a white stripe running along the length. It is best grown in partial shade in moist, well-drained soil. Propagation is by division of the clumps in early spring.
