Description
Veronicastrum tagawae (also called Tagawa's Culver's Root, among many other common names) is a perennial herbaceous plant native to Japan. It has a tall, erect stem, with lanceolate leaves and white flowers in a terminal spike. It is found in moist meadows, thickets, and woodlands.
Uses & Benefits
Veronicastrum tagawae is a popular ornamental plant, and is used in gardens and flower beds. It is also used in traditional medicine to treat a variety of ailments.
Flower, Seeds and Seedlings
Veronicastrum tagawae has white flowers with four petals and yellow anthers. The seeds are small and brown, and the seedlings are thin and have a single pair of oval-shaped leaves.
Cultivation and Propagation
Veronicastrum tagawae can be propagated by seed or division. Sow seeds in spring or autumn in a cold frame. When they are large enough to handle, prick the seedlings out into individual pots and plant them out into their permanent positions in late spring or early summer, after the last expected frosts. Division in spring or autumn. Larger divisions can be planted out direct into their permanent positions. We have found it best to pot up the smaller divisions and grow them on in light shade in a cold frame until they are established.
