Description
Passiflora haematostigma (also called 'Blood-spotted Passionflower', among many other common names) is a species of flowering plant in the Passifloraceae family. It is a woody vine with ovate-cordate leaves and white flowers with purple-blue filaments. It is native to Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador, and Peru, and is found in tropical and subtropical moist montane forests.
Uses & Benefits
Passiflora haematostigma is used as an ornamental plant and for its edible fruits.
Flower, Seeds and Seedlings
The flower of Passiflora haematostigma is a white to pale pink, five-petaled bloom with a yellow center. The seed is a small, round, black seed with a smooth surface. The seedlings are small, with a single pair of leaves that are dark green and oval-shaped.
Cultivation and Propagation
Passiflora haematostigma is a fast-growing, evergreen vine that can reach up to 20 feet in length. It prefers full sun and well-drained soil. Propagation is usually done by cuttings or layering. Cuttings should be taken in the spring or summer and should be about 4-6 inches long. Layering is done by burying a stem in the soil and allowing it to root. Once rooted, the stem can be cut off from the parent plant and replanted.
