Description
Ouratea brevipes (also called Short-Stalked Ouratea, among many other common names) is a shrub or small tree that typically grows up to 8 m (26 ft) tall. It is native to the tropical rainforests of South America, and is found in the Amazon Basin, the Guianas, and the Atlantic Forest of Brazil. It grows in humid forests, often near rivers, and is also found in disturbed areas.
Uses & Benefits
Ouratea brevipes is used as an ornamental plant in gardens, as it produces attractive flowers in shades of yellow, pink, and white. It is also used as a medicinal plant, as it has anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial properties.
Flower, Seeds and Seedlings
Ouratea brevipes has small, yellow flowers with five petals. The seeds are small, black and shiny. The seedlings are small and have a single, oval-shaped leaf.
Cultivation and Propagation
Ouratea brevipes can be cultivated and propagated from seeds or cuttings. Seeds should be sown in a well-drained soil mix and kept moist. Cuttings should be taken from semi-ripe wood and rooted in a light, well-drained soil mix. Both methods should be done in a warm, humid environment.
