It has a bright green, flat, and branched thallus with small, pointed leaves. It is usually found in wet, shady habitats such as moist soil, rocks, and tree trunks.

Metzgeria engelii is a small, evergreen, perennial liverwort that grows in moist, shady, wooded areas. It is propagated by spore sowing. The spores should be sown on a moist, sterile, peat-based compost and covered with a thin layer of soil. Keep the compost moist and in a warm, shaded area. The spores should germinate within a few weeks.
