Description
Rhexia ventricosa (also called Balloon-berry, among many other common names) is a species of flowering shrub in the Melastomataceae family. It is native to Central America, and is found in Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua. It typically grows in montane forests, at elevations of 1,400–2,100 m.
Flower, Seeds and Seedlings
Rhexia ventricosa has small, yellow flowers. The seeds are small and black. The seedlings have small, oval-shaped leaves.
Cultivation and Propagation
Rhexia ventricosa is a fast-growing, evergreen shrub that can reach up to 2 m (6.6 ft) in height. It prefers full sun to partial shade and well-drained soils. Propagation is best done by cuttings or division of the root ball. It is also possible to propagate from seed, although this is not as reliable.
