Description
Calvoa leonardii (also called 'Leonard's Calvoa', among many other common names) is a small to medium-sized shrub with a spreading growth habit. It is native to South America, and grows in dry, open habitats. Its leaves are lanceolate, and its flowers are white with yellow centers.
Uses & Benefits
Calvoa leonardii is used as an ornamental plant, for erosion control, and as a food source for birds and other animals.
Flower, Seeds and Seedlings
Calvoa leonardii has small, yellow flowers with four petals. The seeds are small, black and oval. The seedlings have a single, long, thin leaf with a pointed tip.
Cultivation and Propagation
Calvoa leonardii is a hardy, evergreen shrub that can be propagated from seed or cuttings. To propagate from seed, collect the seeds when they are ripe and sow them in a sterile, moist medium. To propagate from cuttings, take semi-hardwood cuttings in late spring or early summer and root them in a moist, well-draining soil. Cultivation of Calvoa leonardii requires full sun to partial shade, moist soil, and protection from strong winds.
Where to Find Calvoa leonardii
Calvoa leonardii is native to Southeast Asia and is found in moist, shady places in lowland forests.
