Description
Malpighia ovata (also called Oval Malpighia, among many other common names) is an annual herbaceous plant native to the southwestern United States and northern Mexico. It has ovate leaves and small, yellow flowers. It is found in dry, open areas such as grasslands, deserts, and scrublands.
Flower, Seeds and Seedlings
Malpighia ovata has yellow flowers and produces small, black seeds. The seedlings are small and have a single, oval-shaped leaf.
Cultivation and Propagation
Malpighia ovata is an evergreen shrub that grows to a height of 2-3 m. It can be propagated from cuttings or by seed. Cuttings should be taken in the spring or summer and planted in a well-draining soil mix. Seeds should be sown in a well-draining soil mix and kept moist until germination occurs. Once established, the plant requires little maintenance and can tolerate a wide range of soil types.
